White Mischief (1987) DVD
The plot
Among wealthy British expatriates in wartime Kenya, parties and affairs seem to continue at a distance from the war. Diana Broughton’s relationship with the Earl of Erroll unsettles that comfortable world. When he is murdered, private jealousy becomes a public scandal and suspicion falls close to home. Greta Scacchi, Charles Dance and Joss Ackland star in Michael Radford’s dramatization of the Happy Valley murder case. The luxurious surroundings contrast with the possessiveness and social pressure beneath them. For viewers drawn to period mysteries and morally complicated ensembles, the film offers a portrait of a privileged community whose pleasures cannot keep consequences outside the gate.
