The Honorary Consul (1983) DVD — Beyond the Limit

In an Argentine border town, doctor Eduardo Plarr becomes entangled with a British honorary consul and the consul’s wife. When revolutionaries abduct the wrong man, the doctor’s private loyalties collide with political demands, drawing him into a crisis he cannot treat from a safe distance. Richard Gere and Michael Caine lead John Mackenzie’s adaptation of Graham Greene’s novel, released in the United States as Beyond the Limit. Bob Hoskins and Elpidia Carrillo also appear. The film’s appeal lies in its uneasy mix of desire, compromised friendship and political pressure, rather than a simple division between heroes and villains.
