Whistle Down the Wind (1961) DVD
The plot
Children on a Lancashire farm discover an injured stranger hiding in their barn and believe that he is Jesus. They bring him food and keep his presence secret, interpreting his words through their own faith. The adults nearby are searching for an escaped criminal, unaware of the extraordinary meaning the children have given his arrival. Hayley Mills and Alan Bates star in Bryan Forbes’s drama, with Bernard Lee among the supporting cast. The countryside and the children’s everyday lives keep the story grounded while belief transforms their encounter. It is a moving selection for viewers interested in films that explore innocence, compassion and the distance between what children understand and what adults think they know.
