The plot
Leon Bernstein knows how to get to a crime scene before the competition and leave with the photograph everyone wants. His work usually keeps him on the edge of other people’s tragedies. When nightclub owner Kay Levitz asks for help, his curiosity becomes personal and the mob moves closer. Joe Pesci and Barbara Hershey star in Howard Franklin’s atmospheric thriller, set amid the newspapers and nightlife of 1940s New York. The camera becomes both Bernstein’s livelihood and his way of entering a world that rarely welcomes him. It is an appealing selection for fans of crime photography, period mysteries and morally complicated protagonists.
