The plot
Earl Macklin comes out of prison to discover that the mob has killed his brother. Their mistake was robbing a bank controlled by the syndicate, and Macklin is still on its list. Instead of waiting for another hit, he joins an old partner and takes the fight to the organization’s businesses. Robert Duvall, Joe Don Baker and Karen Black star in John Flynn’s crime thriller, with Robert Ryan as the powerful opponent behind the retaliation. The appeal is direct and unsentimental: professional criminals, practical risks and a campaign that keeps escalating. It belongs alongside the tough, stripped-down thrillers of 1970s American cinema.
