The Proposition (1998) DVD
The plot
In 1930s Boston, Eleanor and Arthur Barret want a child and arrange for a young law student to help them conceive. What they intend as a private transaction becomes difficult to contain when affection, jealousy and reputation enter the bargain. A newly arrived priest complicates the family’s secrets further. Madeleine Stowe, William Hurt, Kenneth Branagh and Neil Patrick Harris star in Lesli Linka Glatter’s period drama. The film follows the emotional consequences of treating intimacy as a contract, moving from social respectability toward suspicion and danger. It suits viewers drawn to elaborate family secrets and romantic dramas with a darker edge.
