The plot
Joe Lampton arrives in a prosperous northern town determined to rise above his working-class background. A relationship with an industrialist's daughter seems to offer the future he wants, while an affair with an older married woman draws him toward something less calculated. Ambition makes his choices increasingly costly. Laurence Harvey, Simone Signoret and Heather Sears star in Jack Clayton's adaptation of John Braine's novel. The drama explores the pressure of class through intimate relationships, asking what success means when it depends on hurting others. It is a rewarding choice for viewers interested in British cinema's changing treatment of desire and social mobility.
