The plot
A lonely postal worker hopes to adopt a boy whose difficult childhood has left him wary of lasting attachments. Good intentions are not enough to make them a family. As the prospective father tries to earn the child's trust, both must face the hold that their pasts have on their lives. William Hurt and Chris Cleary Miles lead Chris Menges's drama, with John Hurt and Jane Horrocks among the cast. The story finds its emotion in patience, setbacks and the difference between wanting to care for someone and learning how. It is a thoughtful selection for viewers drawn to intimate dramas about belonging.
