The plot
A former British intelligence chief who defected to the Soviet Union is sent back to recover sensitive documents under a surgically altered identity. Once he has what both sides want, he sees a chance to bargain for his own survival rather than remain someone else’s disposable agent. Michael Caine, Laurence Olivier and Susan George star in Terence Young’s espionage thriller. Its shifting loyalties turn the mission into a contest of leverage, with the returning spy trying to stay ahead of handlers who know his habits. It is an appealing choice for fans of Cold War intrigue and veteran British screen performers.
