The plot
British intelligence assigns Harry Palmer to investigate a disturbing pattern: scientists disappear and return with their abilities damaged. Following the trail means dealing with competing superiors and elusive enemies, and Palmer gradually suspects that the people directing him may be withholding more than they reveal. Michael Caine brings a dry, skeptical presence to Sidney J. Furie’s adaptation of Len Deighton’s thriller. Office politics and mistrust share the stage with espionage, giving this Cold War story a distinctive atmosphere. It is a rewarding choice for viewers who prefer their secret agents resourceful, observant and wary of authority.
