The Best Man (1964) DVD — Widescreen
The plot
Two rivals arrive at a presidential nominating convention with very different ideas about how to win. One prizes principle; the other is prepared to exploit a damaging secret. As both seek the support of a former president, the contest becomes a test of ambition, conscience and political survival. Henry Fonda and Cliff Robertson lead this adaptation of Gore Vidal’s play, directed by Franklin J. Schaffner. Lee Tracy adds another forceful presence to the battle for influence. The Best Man offers collectors a tense political drama built around performances, sharp exchanges and a question that reaches beyond the convention floor: what is victory worth?
