The Amateur (1981) DVD
The plot
CIA specialist Charles Heller understands codes better than field operations. When terrorists kill the woman he loves, his employers' refusal to act drives him toward a mission of his own. Using the information at his disposal to force their cooperation, he enters a world in which technical intelligence offers no guarantee of safety or loyalty. John Savage stars with Christopher Plummer and Marthe Keller in Charles Jarrott's Cold War thriller. The tension comes from watching an inexperienced operative move beyond the protections of his desk, uncertain which professionals he can trust. This is the 1981 film, a useful distinction for collectors seeking the earlier John Savage version.
