Mahler (1974) DVD

The plot
On a train journey to Vienna, composer Gustav Mahler revisits memories, anxieties and the strain within his marriage. The trip becomes a passage through his inner life, as recollections and fantasies reveal the pressures surrounding his music, his ambitions and his relationship with Alma. Robert Powell and Georgina Hale star in Ken Russell's imaginative portrait of the composer. Rather than following a straightforward biographical timeline, the film uses heightened imagery and musical associations to explore a personality. It is an absorbing choice for viewers interested in Russell's work, classical music on screen or unconventional approaches to the artist's biography.
