The plot
A young teacher seeks independence from a restrictive family life and begins exploring the city's nightlife. Her daytime responsibilities and encounters after dark pull her in different directions, as the search for intimacy takes increasingly unsettling turns. Diane Keaton stars with Tuesday Weld and Richard Gere in Richard Brooks's adaptation of Judith Rossner's novel. The film approaches desire, loneliness and personal freedom through an adult character study rather than a reassuring romance. It is a demanding selection for viewers interested in the darker side of 1970s American drama.
