Diary of a Mad Old Man (1987) DVD
The plot
An aging man facing declining health becomes increasingly preoccupied with his daughter-in-law. Gifts and small concessions develop into an unequal arrangement, as his desire to feel alive exposes him to manipulation and puts further strain on his already fragile body. Ralph Michael and Beatie Edney star in Lili Rademakers’s adaptation of Junichiro Tanizaki’s novel, with Suzanne Flon and Derek de Lint. Diary of a Mad Old Man examines desire, dependency and mortality through an uncomfortable domestic relationship, offering viewers a character drama concerned with what people surrender in their resistance to aging.
