The plot
Leonora believes marriage to a wealthy businessman will give her the life she has always wanted. Instead, his possessiveness turns luxury into confinement, and a job with a compassionate doctor offers a glimpse of independence that her husband refuses to accept. Barbara Bel Geddes, Robert Ryan and James Mason star in Max Ophuls's tense romantic drama. Its portrait of control and disillusionment makes a compelling selection for viewers drawn to the troubled relationships of classic film noir.
