The plot
Exiled Russian aristocrats Tatiana and Mikail are living in Paris with very little money they consider their own to spend. Taking jobs as household servants provides an unlikely solution. Their manners and experience make them surprisingly good at the work, until recognition threatens the identities they have adopted. Claudette Colbert and Charles Boyer star with Basil Rathbone in Anatole Litvak’s adaptation of the stage comedy. The reversal of social roles gives the story its wit, while the couple’s obligations to their former world complicate their new life. For viewers who enjoy elegant 1930s comedies, it offers romance and political intrigue beneath the polished household routine.
