The Water Engine (1992) DVD
The plot
Chicago machinist Charles Lang believes he has invented an engine that runs on water. In the 1930s, such a discovery promises freedom from financial struggle for him and his sister. Seeking legal protection for the invention instead brings him into contact with people determined to control what he has made. William H. Macy stars with Patti LuPone, Joe Mantegna and John Mahoney in Steven Schachter’s adaptation of David Mamet’s play. The promise of progress becomes a source of menace as an ordinary working man encounters powerful interests. It is a compelling selection for viewers drawn to cautionary dramas about ingenuity, ownership and the price of refusing to cooperate.
