The plot
Forced into retirement, Colonel Hyde decides that military expertise should still be worth something. He recruits seven former servicemen with financial problems and questionable pasts, then applies the discipline of an army operation to a plan for robbing a bank. Jack Hawkins leads a cast including Nigel Patrick and Richard Attenborough in Basil Dearden’s crime caper. The pleasure is in the planning: specialists take their places, personalities rub against each other, and professional pride begins to resemble another kind of danger. It is an inviting selection for anyone who enjoys British ensemble films and carefully constructed heists.
