The plot
Escaped convict Zach Provo wants revenge on Sam Burgade, the lawman who helped put him behind bars. By kidnapping Burgade’s daughter, he forces his retired enemy back into the saddle and onto a trail designed to end in a confrontation on Provo’s terms. Charlton Heston, James Coburn and Barbara Hershey star in Andrew V. McLaglen’s Western. Set as the old frontier is giving way to a new century, the pursuit tests whether familiar methods can still protect the people a lawman loves. The film brings a harsh edge to the traditional story of a gunfighter called out of retirement.
