The Killing Floor (1984) DVD
The plot
Leaving the South to seek work in Chicago, Frank Custer finds a job in the stockyards during the First World War. The promise of better wages soon gives way to difficult choices as union organizing, racial hostility and divided loyalties shape life inside and outside the slaughterhouse. Damien Leake, Alfre Woodard and Moses Gunn feature in Bill Duke’s historical drama. The story approaches a major social struggle through the daily pressures facing a worker and his family. It is a thoughtful choice for viewers interested in American labor history, the Great Migration and character-led television filmmaking.
