The plot
Projectionist Ivan Sanchin considers his appointment to screen films for Stalin an extraordinary honor. Yet the privilege of working close to power gives him a view of fear and manipulation that reaches into his own home, testing a devotion he has long accepted without question. Tom Hulce, Lolita Davidovich and Bob Hoskins star in Andrei Konchalovsky’s historical drama. The story approaches dictatorship through an ordinary man’s admiration for his leader and the damage surrounding that faith. For viewers interested in political cinema, it offers a personal perspective on the distance between public loyalty and private suffering.
