The plot
Ferdinand Waldo Demara has an extraordinary memory, abundant confidence and a habit of stepping into professions for which he has no qualifications. Each new identity opens another door, but his most daring impersonations bring responsibilities that charm alone cannot solve. Tony Curtis takes the leading role in Robert Mulligan’s comedy-drama, inspired by Robert Crichton’s account of Demara’s exploits. The film moves through a succession of borrowed lives, balancing the amusement of a successful bluff with the anxiety of discovery. It is an engaging choice for anyone who enjoys character-driven stories about ingenuity and deception.
