The Outsider (1961) DVD

The plot
Ira Hayes joins the Marines and becomes one of the men associated with the flag raising on Iwo Jima. The photograph brings a kind of fame he never sought. Away from the battlefield, public celebrations offer little relief from grief, prejudice and the strain of being made into a symbol. Tony Curtis portrays Hayes in Delbert Mann’s biographical drama, with James Franciscus and Gregory Walcott. The film follows the distance between a national image of heroism and the private life of the man beneath it. For viewers interested in the human aftermath of war, it offers a serious companion to more conventional combat stories.
