The Cat and the Canary (1939) DVD
The plot
Relatives gather in a secluded Louisiana mansion to hear the terms of a wealthy man’s will. An unexpected inheritance, unsettling warnings and news of an escaped killer turn the evening into a test of everyone’s nerves—and leave one young woman in particular danger. Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard star in Elliott Nugent’s blend of mystery and comedy. The Cat and the Canary uses the familiar pleasures of an old dark house, suspicious relatives and alarming discoveries, while Hope’s nervous humor keeps the mood lively. It is an accessible selection for a classic-film night with both laughs and suspense.
