The Music of Chance (1993) DVD — Widescreen
The plot
A drifting former firefighter meets a gambler who promises an opportunity to win back his fortune. He agrees to finance a poker game against two eccentric millionaires, but the loss leaves both men working off their debt by building a stone wall on the winners' secluded property. Mandy Patinkin and James Spader star in Philip Haas's adaptation of Paul Auster's novel. An apparently simple wager becomes a strange examination of freedom, chance and the rules people accept. The combination of a confined setting and an increasingly uncertain bargain makes it a thought-provoking choice for viewers drawn to offbeat literary dramas.
