Lonely Are the Brave (1962) DVD
The plot
Independent cowboy Jack Burns deliberately lands in jail to help an old friend escape. The plan leaves him a fugitive instead, pursued across a landscape where fences, roads and modern police methods are closing in on the freedom he has always taken for granted. Kirk Douglas stars opposite Walter Matthau and Gena Rowlands in David Miller's contemporary Western, adapted by Dalton Trumbo from Edward Abbey's novel. The pursuit works as both a tense escape story and a portrait of a man out of step with his time. It is a strong choice for viewers drawn to reflective Westerns.
