The plot
An American businessman operating in wartime China tries to keep his attention on profit rather than politics. Traveling with a schoolteacher and the students she is protecting forces him to confront the human cost of the conflict and decide where his loyalties belong. Alan Ladd, Loretta Young and William Bendix star in John Farrow's wartime adventure. Its journey through danger gives classic-film viewers a story in which personal responsibility becomes as important as reaching safety.
