Walk the Proud Land (1956) DVD
The plot
John Clum arrives at the San Carlos Apache reservation determined to replace coercion with a measure of self-government. His plans bring him into conflict with military officers and others who distrust his approach. Building confidence among the people he has been sent to advise proves more complicated than issuing new orders. Audie Murphy, Anne Bancroft and Pat Crowley star in Jesse Hibbs’s dramatization of Clum’s work. The story places administration, personal conviction and competing ideas of authority at the center of a Western setting. For viewers interested in Murphy’s films beyond straightforward gunfighter adventures, it offers a role built around negotiation and the effort to change an established system.
