The Witches (1966) DVD

The plot
After a traumatic experience abroad, teacher Gwen Mayfield hopes that a post in a quiet English village will offer a fresh start. Small disturbances and troubling discoveries gradually undermine that hope. Behind the reassuring surroundings, she begins to suspect an organized evil that the villagers have reason to conceal. Joan Fontaine leads this Hammer production, directed by Cyril Frankel from a screenplay by Nigel Kneale. Kay Walsh and Alec McCowen join her in a story that turns rural respectability into a source of suspicion. It is an atmospheric selection for viewers who enjoy occult mysteries in which the greatest danger comes from people who seem entirely ordinary.
