The Story of Dr. Wassell (1944) DVD
The plot
As Japanese forces advance across Java, wounded American sailors face being left behind. Navy doctor Corydon Wassell refuses to abandon the men in his care. Getting them to safety means finding transport, shelter and a route through a country overtaken by war. Gary Cooper stars with Laraine Day and Signe Hasso in Cecil B. DeMille’s dramatization of Wassell’s rescue effort. The story blends personal history with a dangerous evacuation, placing a physician’s responsibility at the center of the action. It is an inviting selection for viewers who enjoy classic wartime dramas in which courage means protecting people who cannot protect themselves.
