The Jazz Singer (1980) DVD
The plot
A young New York cantor dreams of reaching an audience beyond the synagogue. Pursuing a career in popular music takes him to Los Angeles, where a supportive manager encourages his talent, but success threatens the family relationships and religious responsibilities that have shaped his life. Neil Diamond stars with Laurence Olivier and Lucie Arnaz in this 1980 version of The Jazz Singer. The music gives voice to a conflict between inherited expectations and personal ambition. For Diamond listeners and viewers who enjoy show-business dramas, the appeal is in watching a performer search for a future without losing his roots.
