My Man Godfrey (1957) DVD — David Niven
The plot
Socialite Irene Bullock finds Godfrey living beneath a bridge during a scavenger hunt and brings him into her wealthy family's home as a butler. His composure wins admirers in a household where good manners are far from guaranteed, while Irene's growing affection and her sister's jealousy complicate his new position. David Niven and June Allyson lead Henry Koster's romantic comedy, with Martha Hyer and Jessie Royce Landis among the cast. This 1957 version gives the story a different leading pair from the earlier adaptation. The pleasure lies in a poised outsider navigating privilege, romantic expectations and the Bullocks' unpredictable behavior.
