1984 (1954) DVD — BBC Adaptation
The plot
In a state that polices thought as closely as behavior, Winston Smith quietly questions the world around him. His work alters historical records for the Party, but his memories and his growing attachment to Julia threaten the obedience demanded by Big Brother. Peter Cushing plays Winston in the BBC’s 1954 television adaptation of George Orwell’s novel, with Yvonne Mitchell and André Morell. Adapted by Nigel Kneale and directed by Rudolph Cartier, this production offers a different interpretation from the later John Hurt film.
