How Movie Effects Create Spectacle

Film stories & discoveries About 2 min read

A memorable effects sequence begins before the audience gets a clear view of the effect. A character hears something, another person hesitates, or the camera leaves an empty space that suddenly feels important. Watching those preparations can reveal more than trying to identify every computer-generated shot.

Jurassic Park: more than one method creates the illusion

Amblin’s production account of Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park (1993) describes a combination of computer-generated dinosaurs and full-scale animatronic creations from Stan Winston’s team. Industrial Light & Magic’s account explains the digital work. The finished film is a useful example of techniques serving the same fictional world.

Instead of dividing the movie into “real” and “fake,” ask whether each image gives you a clear sense of weight, distance and danger. An audience needs to understand where a character stands in relation to a creature before the encounter can become suspenseful.

Watch the reaction before the reveal

Try following a performer’s face through a sequence. What do they seem to know before you do? A reaction can suggest scale or fear without showing the object directly. When the reveal finally arrives, it answers a question the scene has already planted.

This also gives the effect an emotional context. The same impressive image could produce wonder, comedy or alarm depending on who sees it and what that person needs to do next.

Listen for information outside the frame

On a second viewing, notice what the sound tells you about a space the camera has not shown. Does a noise announce an approach, mask another event or draw attention away from the real danger? Then watch where the next cut places you. Sound and editing can make an unseen presence feel immediate.

Compare scenes, not technology budgets

Choose an effects sequence from an older film and one from a newer film. Give each the same three questions: can I follow the action, do I understand what is at stake, and does the sequence change the story? A larger image is not automatically a stronger answer.

Our Science Fiction and Action & Adventure collections offer places to find your next comparison. Check individual listings for the available edition; a film’s effects history does not establish a DVD’s transfer or supplements.
